🏨 Where We Set Up Shop

Welcome back to Nomad for Less and hope you had a great New Year! For my first deep-dive of 2026, Jacqui and I decided to explore Salisbury, Maryland. Known for being centrally located between the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic, Salisbury offers that perfect mix of suburban convenience and urban amenities that us nomads crave. After a long drive to reach our destination, we spent a few days uncovering the hidden gems of this historic city.

We stayed at the Holiday Inn Express, which served as a reliable home base for our trip. At roughly $95 per night, it fits perfectly into a budget-conscious nomad lifestyle. If you're looking to stay longer, Salisbury is famously affordable; two-bedroom apartments in the area average between $1,100 and $1,400, and a salary of $50,000 to $60,000 is enough to live very comfortably here.

🍽️ The Downtown Culinary Scene

Salisbury’s downtown is currently in the midst of a vibrant revitalization movement, and the food scene reflects that energy.

Mogan’s Oyster House: Located in the historic One Plaza East building (formerly the Wicomico Hotel), this spot is a tribute to Eastern Shore seafood culture. Jacqui and I had an incredible meal here. We started with French onion wontons and crab lump, followed by ricotta gnocchi and a side of mac and cheese. I highly recommend their Bees Knees cocktail, it was the perfect pairing for the inspired coastal cuisine.

Roadie Joe’s Bar & Grill: This place is a local landmark on Main Street with a quirky, fun vibe. We grabbed some bar food staples: cheese fries, buffalo chicken dip, and crab fries. Make sure to look up at the ceiling while you eat; it's covered in unique cartoon images. They also host regular events like trivia and live music if you're looking to meet locals.

Bury Tavern: If you want a more relaxed evening, stop by Bury Tavern on West Main Street. We dropped in for drinks and spent some time at their pool table. It’s a great spot for a casual hangout in the heart of the city.

🤫 Speakeasy Vibes and Nightlife

If you only go to one bar in Salisbury, make it The Brick Room. Located in the historic Williams Building (built in 1900), it has been transformed into a gathering place with a 1920s speakeasy-inspired ambiance.

We actually went twice! On our first visit, we enjoyed an espresso martini, a margarita, and a mojito while playing Jimmy Buffett on the TouchTunes jukebox. We loved the exposed brick and the "exclusive" feel of the space. We returned later that night when the crowd was more lively to try some Soju and play the "ring on a string" game. It’s easily the most spirited spot in town.

⭐️ Final Verdict: The Slowmad’s Choice

Salisbury is an ideal "slow-travel" destination. It is 30 miles from Ocean City and about two hours from D.C. and Baltimore, making it a great hub if you want to explore the coast without the high beach-town prices.

Whether you're grabbing a craft beer at a speakeasy or exploring the "Crossroads of Delmarva" history, Salisbury offers a laid-back pace that proves you don't need a massive city to have a great nomad experience.

Visiting Salisbury is like finding a well-worn, high-quality leather chair in a trendy modern lounge; it provides a sturdy, historic foundation of coastal tradition while comfortably evolving to meet the energy of a new generation.
