🤩 Working remotely from the Magic City!

Welcome back to Nomad for Less! Jacqui and I spent six weeks working our way around Miami, and let me tell you: between the waterfront views, happy-hour margaritas, and one very memorable question, this trip delivered. We explored downtown, Brickell, South Beach, and Little Havana, and pulled together the places where we actually spent our time and money. Let’s get into it! 🌴

🏨 The Base: Downtown Miami

When you’re balancing work and travel, your home base matters. We booked our extended stay through Landing and used downtown Miami as our jumping-off point for waterfront walks, Bayside, and adventures across the city. Our stay came to about $158 per night on average. Miami isn’t exactly a bargain, so we made happy hours and shareable plates part of the game plan.

🍽️ The Food Files: Where We Ate

Miami has no shortage of places to eat, but the best part of a longer stay is getting to mix quick bites, happy-hour deals, and the occasional big night out.

• Café Gianna: When the rain rolled in, we grabbed pressed sandwiches from the window at this Italian-style café at the Gale. It’s a solid quick-bite option when you need to get back to your day without turning lunch into a whole production.

• The Gale rooftop: We went big on truffle edamame and sake, then added dumplings and fried rice. The appetizers were excellent, and the rooftop views made this a great way to kick off our time in Miami.

• Meraki Greek Bistro: Happy-hour grazing is absolutely the move here. We worked through lamb sliders, fried mussels, gyro bites, grilled calamari, and chicken souvlaki. Come hungry and share a bunch of plates.

• Cantina La Veinte: This Brickell Mexican spot has a black-and-gold look, a waterfront setting, and a menu that had us coming back. One visit brought duck enchiladas, queso fundido with chistorra, tacos, and Cadillac margaritas. Another brought chicharrón ribeye and short-rib risotto. This is a splurge, but it’s a fun one for a night out.

• Smith & Wollensky: We shared an excellent bone-in ribeye with onion straws, creamed spinach, and martinis while taking in the waterfront at South Pointe. It also happened to be our engagement celebration, so this meal will be a little hard to top. 😄

• Dolores But You Can Call Me Lolita: The name alone deserves a mention. At this former firehouse in Brickell, we posted up at the bar for happy-hour apps, including very angry potatoes and a wagyu double cheeseburger. Great food, great atmosphere, and a strong choice when you want a few bites with your drinks.

• Naked Taco and Oh Mexico: South Beach happy hour did not disappoint. At Naked Taco we went for margaritas, queso fundido, and carne asada street tacos. On Lincoln Road, Oh Mexico brought the guacamole, margaritas, and tequila pops. I will always appreciate a cocktail with an ice pop in it.

• La Cañita: Bayside’s waterfront setting makes this an easy stop between exploring and people-watching. We ordered glazed pork belly, ham croquetas, smashed avocado, and a Margarita Queen. Grab a seat and enjoy the marina views.

• Mamo: If you’re after a fancier date night, this Brickell Italian restaurant fits the bill. We enjoyed the prix-fixe, with a gimlet for me and a spritz for Jacqui. It definitely felt like an occasion.

• Pubbelly Sushi: We mixed it up with Korean wings, pork belly bao, kimchee fried rice, and edamame. This Brickell City Centre stop is a good option when your group can’t decide on just one type of food.

• Marabú: Another spot on our Brickell City Centre list, this Cuban restaurant brings coal-fired cooking and a Havana-inspired bar to the mall. The atmosphere was great, and my mojito came with a big stick of sugarcane which is a garnish I can definitely get behind. 🍹

• Tacology: Another Brickell City Centre happy-hour stop: pastor, chicken, and carne asada tacos alongside margaritas and tequila sodas. A good reminder that you can enjoy Miami without making every meal a full-on splurge.

🍸 Liquid Assets: Bars & Best Views

• Sugar: This rooftop at EAST Miami is all about the skyline. I ordered a gimlet and Jacqui had a margarita; the drinks and atmosphere were great, and on a clear day the views are hard to beat.

• Serena: We started a South Beach day on this lush rooftop with happy-hour margaritas and nachos. There was a pool party going on nearby that we didn’t join, but the rooftop itself had great vibes.

• Pier 5 and Bayside: We kept finding our way back to the waterfront for mojitos, margaritas, and Cuban music. One night there were dancers on the bar top, and before we left we returned to the bar by the stage for one more round of music. If you want a lively evening with a view, this area delivers.

• Tipsy Flamingo: This downtown cocktail bar brings plenty of color and a lively atmosphere. We tried the La Floresta and South of 5th cocktails along with The Tipsy Flamingo - a fun stop when you’re ready to trade waterfront views for neon lights.

• Amazónico: The jungle-inspired bar is a whole scene. Jacqui got a margarita, I went for a tiki-style pineapple drink, and we listened to a really talented singer. We also chatted with the bartender about the restaurant’s locations in other countries. Great atmosphere for a night out.

• Joia Beach: Margaritas and mojitos on the beach, with views of the water and downtown Miami? Yes, please. This was a great waterfront stop when we wanted to slow down and take in the skyline.

• Ball & Chain: If you’re in Little Havana, stop in for a daiquiri. Ours were some of the best we had in Miami, and Calle Ocho’s music and energy make this a fun place to continue exploring after a tour.

• Puttshack: We didn’t play mini golf here; we sat outside with drinks and took in some of the best downtown night views. It’s in Brickell City Centre, and I love the indoor-outdoor setup of the mall.

• El Patio: Not every stop is a winner. We grabbed drinks at this Miami Beach spot, but the service wasn’t the best, so we finished up and bounced.

🌴 The Entertainment Playbook

• Little Havana: Our tour was one of the highlights of the entire trip. Walking through the neighborhood and seeing a cigar being rolled gave us a chance to experience a different side of Miami. Make time to explore Calle Ocho and grab one of those Ball & Chain daiquiris while you’re there.

• A boat ride around Miami: We cruised past waterfront homes and took in the skyline from the water. The boat was a bit packed, but it was still a fun way to see the sights and imagine which mansion you’d choose if your newsletter suddenly made you a billionaire.

• Florida Panthers: We made the trip to Sunrise for a Panthers game, and the arena and atmosphere were awesome. We grabbed a chicken quesadilla and fries and settled in for hockey. Vamos Gatos! 🐆

• Miami Heat: We also caught a Heat game downtown. I’ll be honest: it was a pretty bad game, and after watching that one I’m not sure I need to rush back to an NBA game. Your mileage may vary, but you’re getting our real opinion here.

• Miami Boat Show: We stepped aboard some incredible mega-yachts and pretended we were rich for a day. The show had boats, exhibits, and plenty to look at even if buying a yacht isn’t exactly in your current travel budget.

🚝 Nomad Logistics

Miami and Miami Beach cover a lot of ground, so think about where you want to spend your time before choosing a base. We used rideshares for trips around the area and took a water taxi from downtown to the beach before stopping for happy hour on Lincoln Road.

If you’re heading to a Panthers game, remember that the arena is in Sunrise, so plan for the trip outside Miami.

💸 Stretching the budget: Miami can get expensive fast. We found happy hours useful for trying more spots, and shared plates made it easy to sample a few things without ordering a full meal at every stop. We also used inKind credit at participating restaurants; check the current terms and offers before counting on a particular discount.

🔥 Final Verdict: Miami Has Range

Miami gave us the mix we look for as digital nomads: a base for work, plenty to explore when the laptops closed, and more great food and waterfront views than we could fit into one guide. From Little Havana and a Panthers game to rooftop margaritas and a very special steak dinner, this was a trip we won’t forget. Bring your appetite, keep an eye out for happy hour, and leave room in the schedule to see where the day takes you. ✈️
