👯 Why Finding Community Matters for Digital Nomads

Hey nomads! For today’s edition of Nomad for Less, I wanted to do something a little different. I wanted to cover a really important topic that many digital nomads struggle with: finding community.

One of the biggest challenges that digital nomads face is loneliness. Working remotely can be isolating, especially when you’re constantly moving from one place to another. You may miss having a stable social circle, a sense of belonging, and a support system.

That’s why finding community matters for digital nomads. Community is not just about having people to hang out with or chat with online. It’s about having people who share your values, goals, and passions. It’s about having people who understand your lifestyle, challenges, and aspirations. It’s about having people who can inspire you, motivate you, and help you grow.

Finding community can have many benefits for digital nomads, such as:

  • 💸 Opportunities - You can often find new clients, collaborators, mentors, or partners through your network if you’re a freelancer or entrepreneur.

  • 🧠 Knowledge - It’s great to learn from other nomads who have different backgrounds, experiences, and life perspectives. You can also share your own expertise and insights with others who may benefit from them.

  • 🤗 Support - Being a digital nomad can be stressful at times, especially when you’re dealing with visa issues, culture shock, or health problems. Having a community of people who care about you and who can offer advice, encouragement, or assistance can make a big difference in your well-being and happiness.

  • 🎉 Fun - It’s great to meet new friends who can join you in exploring new places, trying new things, or having a good time. Things like social events, activities, and projects where you’re working with others can really enrich your life.

Finding community is not always easy for digital nomads, but it’s definitely worth it. In the next sections, I’ll show you some ways to find and connect with other nomads in different cities and online.

Alone, we can do so little; together, we can do so much.

🌐 Online Communities for Digital Nomads

One of the easiest ways to find community as a digital nomad is to join online communities. They are accessible anytime and anywhere as long as you have an internet connection. They are also diverse and inclusive as they welcome people from different countries, cultures, and backgrounds. You can also choose how much time and energy you want to invest in them and usually the more you contribute to these groups, the more you get out of them.

There are many online communities for digital nomads that you can join depending on your preferences and needs. Here are some of the most popular ones:

  • 🎒 Nomad for Less Slack Channel - I’ve got to include a little shout out to our brand new Slack channel here. In case you haven’t joined yet and you’re looking to connect with fellow nomads from this community, you can join by clicking this link!

  • 📘 Facebook Groups - Facebook groups are one of the most common ways to connect with other digital nomads online. There are hundreds of groups that cater to different niches, topics, and locations. Some of the general groups that you can join are:

  • 👽️ Reddit - Reddit is another popular platform where you can find online communities for digital nomads. Reddit is divided into subreddits which are forums dedicated to specific topics or themes. Some of the subreddits that you can check out are:

  • 📝 Nomad List - Nomad List is a website that ranks the best cities for digital nomads based on various factors such as cost of living, internet speed, safety, weather, etc. It also has a community feature where you can chat with other nomads, ask questions, share tips, and join meetups. You can also filter the community by location, industry, or interest.

  • 💬 Slack Groups - Slack is a communication tool that allows you to create and join channels for different topics or purposes. Slack is normally used as a tool for work, but many communities use it for real-time chat as well (including ours!).

These are just some of the online communities for digital nomads that you can join. There are many more than I can list that you can discover and explore. The key is to find the ones that suit your goals, personality, and vibe and then contributing to the community in a meaningful way.

🤝 Digital Nomad Networking Events

Another way to find community as a digital nomad is to attend digital nomad networking events. These are great opportunities to meet new people who share your lifestyle and interests. You can learn new things and stay updated on the latest trends and developments in your industry or field. Use these events to showcase your work and find new opportunities for business relationships and friendships.

There are many digital nomad networking events that you can attend depending on your availability and budget. Here are some of the most notable ones:

  • 🏃 Running Remote - A conference for remote work leaders and entrepreneurs. It covers topics such as hiring, managing, scaling, and retaining remote teams. It also provides networking opportunities with other remote work experts and enthusiasts. It usually takes place in Bali, Indonesia every June, but it also has an online version.

It focuses on the long-term aspects of the digital nomad lifestyle such as community building, personal development, social impact, and legacy. It also offers various activities such as masterminds, workshops, retreats, and parties. It started in 2016 in Bangkok, Thailand and has since been held in Barcelona, Spain; Medellin, Colombia; Wellington, New Zealand; and Cape Town, South Africa.

  • 🛳️ Nomad Cruise - A traveling conference for digital nomads that takes place on a cruise ship. It offers talks, workshops, networking sessions, and entertainment on board while sailing to different destinations around the world. It also organizes excursions and meetups on land and usually happens twice a year in spring and autumn with different routes and durations.

  • 🗺️ The Nomad World Fest - A festival for digital nomads that celebrates the diversity and creativity of the nomadic culture. It offers talks, workshops, skill sharing, business coaching, and networking opportunities. It also has social events such as BBQs, parties, and tours. It takes place in Albufeira, Portugal every October.

These are just some of the digital nomad networking events that you can attend but there are many more out there that you can find and join. The key is to plan ahead, book early, and make the most of your time and money.

🏡 Connecting with Digital Nomads through Co-Living

A third way to find community as a digital nomad is to try co-living. Co-living is the practice of sharing living and work spaces with other people who have similar goals or values. It can be done in various ways such as renting a room or an apartment in a co-living space, joining a co-living program or retreat, or creating your own co-living arrangement with friends or strangers.

Co-living has many advantages for digital nomads. It can help you save money on accommodation and utilities, as well as provide you with amenities such as internet, kitchen, laundry, etc. It can also help you save time on finding and securing a place to stay and work, as well as give you access to local knowledge and resources while connecting with other nomads who can become your friends, colleagues, or mentors.

Co-living isn’t without its challenges though. It can require you to compromise on your privacy, comfort, or preferences, as well as deal with potential conflicts or issues with your co-living mates. It’s not for everyone, but it can be a really great way to make new friends if you’re comfortable living with other people.

If you do decide to try co-living, some of the popular options are:

  • 🏕️ Outsite - Outsite is a network of co-living spaces in various locations around the world such as Bali, Costa Rica, Lisbon, New York, etc. It offers private rooms or apartments with shared workspaces and common areas. There’s also services such as wifi, cleaning, and laundry available and they organize events such as yoga, surfing, hiking, etc.

  • 💫 Selina - Selina is a hospitality brand that combines co-living, co-working, and travel experiences in various locations around the world such as Mexico, Colombia, Portugal, Israel, and others. They offer different types of accommodation such as dorms, private rooms, and suites with shared workspaces and common areas. They also have services such as wifi, cleaning, and laundry and they host events such as workshops, concerts, and parties.

  • 🚶 Remote Year - Remote Year is a program that allows you to travel and work remotely in different cities around the world for a year or shorter periods. It offers accommodation in co-living spaces with shared workspaces and common areas and has services like wifi, transportation, and even local guides. They also have events including cultural activities, networking sessions, volunteering opportunities, and more!

These are a few of the co-living options for digital nomads that you can try. Check them out and compare the pros and cons with your average AirBnB or apartment rental before booking.
