🇨🇦 Canada plans to attract more tech talent with a new remote work visa scheme

Canada, which has long welcomed digital nomads for stays of up to six months while on a visitor visa, announced it’s working on a new “tech talent strategy” to attract foreign workers by the end of this year. The government is consulting with provinces and territories to find ways to promote Canada to digital nomads, and it’s working on allowing startups to apply for work permits of up to three years.

Canada is a popular destination for digital nomads who love nature, culture, and diversity. You can enjoy the cosmopolitan cities of Toronto and Vancouver, the scenic landscapes of Banff and Niagara Falls, or the French flair of Montreal and Quebec City. Canada offers a high quality of life, a friendly culture, and a variety of activities for every taste. Whether you’re into skiing, hiking, or maple syrup tasting, you’ll find something to love in Canada. 🍁

If you’re interested in working remotely from Canada, you can find more information about this new initiative here.

🌎 Digital nomadism continues to grow, despite the back-to-the-office trend

According to a new report by MBO Partners, a platform that connects independent professionals with clients, the number of digital nomads in the U.S. has tripled since 2019, reaching 17.3 million in 2023. That means about 11% of U.S. workers self-identify as digital nomads.

The report, which is based on a survey of more than 3,800 U.S. workers, reveals some interesting facts and trends about this growing community. For example:

  • 👤 The average age of digital nomads is 34 years old

  • 💼 The most common professions are software developers, writers, and marketers

  • ✈️ The most preferred destinations are Lisbon (Portugal), Chiang Mai (Thailand), and Berlin (Germany)

  • 💰 The average monthly budget is $2,500

  • 😓 The biggest challenges are loneliness, visas, and taxes

  • 📚 The main sources of information are Facebook groups, blogs, and podcasts

The report also shows that digital nomads are highly satisfied with their work and income levels, compared to non-nomads. 80% of digital nomads say they are highly satisfied with their work, versus 59% of non-nomads. 82% of digital nomads say they are satisfied or very satisfied with their income, versus 69% of non-nomads.

The rise of digital nomadism is driven by several factors, such as the availability of technology, the flexibility of work arrangements, the desire for travel and adventure, and the lower cost of living in some countries. Despite the back-to-the-office trend that many companies are adopting after the pandemic, many workers are choosing to embrace a location-independent lifestyle that allows them to work from anywhere in the world. 🚀
